The Act of Remembering (2015 - 2016)

Through a single sensory element; a word, a smell, a place or a person, an entire forgotten moment is remembered. Bringing fragments from my subconscious to the forefront of my mind, these sensations act as catalysts for memories. While some instances are vividly recalled, some remain partially obscured. Maybe the color of the room is remembered, but the context of the situation is forgotten.

With this body of work, I am attempting to hold on to these moments and uncover some sort of certainty within the past; a task is that principally unachievable. While these photographs are made in an instant, in the instant, of an instance and are fundamentally recorders of memory, their meaning is ever changing with the continuous flow of experience. Although the photographs are representations of my experiences, the viewer’s access point is the apparatus- a topographical contortion of folded photographs-used to exemplify the convoluted flow of remembering. It is the apparent, yet not totally accessible memories that the folded images embody, which can only be accessed by interacting with the construction.

I am interested in the loss that occurs between reality and representation, embracing the fact that this exploration does not lead to uncovering the authenticity of a memory, but is a pursuit to describe the very act of remembering.
